Year 8 Rugby – season starts with seven try success...

Our Year 8 Rugby team began their Salford Schools’ League campaign on Wednesday night against St Ambrose Barlow. This game was a repeat of last year’s play-off, with Walkden looking to avenge a narrow defeat. Walkden started the game strongly and raced into an early lead when Ben Gore crossed in the corner. Ambrose fought back but were unable to find a way through Walkden’s resilient defence, and their frustrations grew as a kick for the corner was fielded by Tom Morris with the winger beating would-be tacklers to race the length of the field to touch down under the posts. Gore added his second try of the half when he broke the line after good work by Danny Stone. The half ended with Walkden adding a fourth try as Gore completed his hat-trick with another line break. Stone added a third conversion to give Walkden a 22-0 half time lead.

Into the second half and Walkden’s high level of intensity continued as Stone’s cross field kick was caught by George Bailey who crashed over to make it 26-0. The boys’ defence was fantastic throughout, whilst also looking a threat in attack. Beck Ebsworth added a sixth try with a solo effort before William Toone completed the scoring after breaking the line. Stone’s fourth conversion of the game made the scoreline 36-0. Ambrose refused to give up, and gained a consolation score in the closing minutes, Walkden running out comfortable 36-6 winners. A great start to the season and with three more tough games to follow, the boys will look to continue this for the rest of term.
