Year 5 Walkden High Football Tournament

On Tuesday 23rd March Walkden High School had the pleasure of welcoming 8 local schools for the first Year 5 Football Tournament we have hosted.

The format of the competition was 2 groups leading into the top 2 teams from each group going into the semi finals. Like the Year 6 tournament that took place last term we were lucky to have brilliant Year 9 Sport Mentors; Liam Lawlor, Ross Burns, Dominic Jones and Tom Reeves officiating and organising the afternoon. We were also lucky to be able to welcome representatives from Manchester United Academy who we had invited down as guests.

Marek Szmid who is the Head of Education at Manchester United was accompanied by Joe Riley who plays on the right wing for Manchester United Under 18 Team and is hotly tipped to make the Senior Team. The standard of football was high throughout the afternoon and all children played with great commitment and sportsmanship. St Mark’s, Ellenbrook, St Andrew’s and Mesne Lea all progressed to the Semi Finals with St Andrew’s and Ellenbrook winning through to the final. The Final was a close affair with St Andrew’s narrowly beating Ellenbrook 1-0. Joe Riley presented Ellenbrook with their runners up medals and then St Andrews with the trophy and winners medals.

Well done St Andrews!!
