Year 7 Salford Schools’ Cup & Girls Football

Walkden leave it late!!!!!!!

Last Thursday the current year 8 football team played their delayed year 7 Salford Schools’ Cup final. Moorside had been unbeaten going into the game and we knew it was going to be very close. However after a long build up the team were in a confident mood going into the game. Things didn’t quite go to plan with the team conceding two goals in the first half and having an uphill battle in the second half.

Luke Wilson came off the bench to score a great goal to make it 2-1 in the opening minutes of the second half. Both teams had chances to score throughout but with 10 minutes to go Charlie Wellens made a break into the box and was brought down for a penalty. Charlie stepped up to take the penalty, but a great save from the Moorside keeper denied him from scoring.

Walkden kept pressing and with 5 minutes to play found the equaliser we had been searching for; Charlie Wellens putting the ball beyond the keeper to take the game to extra time. Into the five minutes of extra time Walkden’s excellent fitness started to tell. With Walkden pressing hard in Moorside’s half, Charlie scored another to make it 3-2.

In the final minute of extra time Leon Bawden chased down the keeper and put the ball into the net. The game finished 4-2 with Walkden being crowned Year 7 Salford School Champions.

Players: Alex Walker, Charlie Wellens, Luke Wilson, Bailey Dalton, Spike Lee, Daniel Owen, Harris McNeil, James Whittle, Leon Bawden, Tom Masters, Anthony Miles, Jordan Hamblett,

On Wednesday, our girls’ footballers travelled to Platt Lane, home of the Manchester City Academy to take part in the Manchester FA Girls’ Football Festival. The girls got a chance to meet stars of the FA WSL and have a Q&A session with Manchester City and England stars Toni Duggan and Chelsea Nightingale. A skills session was then followed by matches against other schools from the city, with our girls winning 4 out of 5 of their matches. Great work ladies! Can’t wait for the start of the league season!
