Year 7 Football

– A, B, C it’s easy as 1, 2, 3....

On Monday night, our Year 7 Football B team made it three wins from three with a 4-3 victory at St Ambrose Barlow. The boys made the perfect start when Sam Edge headed home from Paul Viller‟s corner inside two minutes. St Ambrose became more of a threat as the half wore on, and had it not been for Femi Adesanya in goal, the hosts would‟ve been 3 or 4 goals to the good! The equaliser arrived towards the end of the half as the ball was bundled home from close range.

A host of second half substitutes had the desired effect as Viller‟s cut back found Oliver Gaskill at the back post who fired into the roof of the net, 2-1. Ambrose found another equaliser when a long range effort eluded Adesanya but the boys found a third when Alex Stake played in Gaskill who poked the ball home then after Jordan Frisby‟s shot was saved, Viller was on hand to make it 4-2. The home side hit a consolation goal in the closing minute but Walkden held firm to chalk another „W‟ on the board.

This week, the boys made the trip to Salford City Academy for their final group game looking to make it 4 wins from 4. On a tight Astroturf pitch, the boys struggled for consistency and took 10 minutes to register a chance as Sam Edge‟s cross was diverted in by a stray leg to make it 1-0 and that‟s how it remained at half time. The second half was a vast improvement as the boys found the back of the net 8 more times as Louis Quinn, Liam Spinks and Edge all bagged two goals apiece whilst Oliver Gaskill and Jake Bushby added the others to complete a 9-0 rout. Top of the group with an unbeaten record, other teams will be fearful of the „B‟ team going into the Quarter Finals in the New Year. Elsewhere, after half term the boys have an English Schools‟ Cup tie to look forward to against St Francis Xavier‟s College Liverpool (date TBC.).

Year 11 Rugby

– back to back victories put Walkden in pole position for final...

Last Wednesday, Walkden‟s Year 11 Rugby team began their season with a seven-try victory over a spirited Swinton side. The boys raced into a commanding lead when Reece Walker crossed for three first half tries and Damola Ayanlaja‟s try extended the advantage to 24-0 with Ben Moseley 4 from 4 conversions. With injuries taking their toll on the Walkden side, Swinton hit back with tries either side of half time to make it 24-12. A second try from Ayanlaja stretched the lead to 28-12 before the visitors struck twice more to cut the deficit to 4 points. The boys had to dig deep and summon their reserves as Ayanlaja‟s hat-trick try eased the tension before Adam Lindsay crossed in the final minutes to complete a 40-24 victory.

The following night, Harrop Fold were the visitors to Old Clough Lane, and the game was in stark contrast to the night before! Walkden ran in 11 tries in total to complete a resound-ing 64-6 success. Ben Moseley was the star of the show, scoring four tries and kicking 10 conversions for a personal haul of 36 points. Damola Ayanlaja crossed for another hat-trick whilst there were also tries for Jack Cullen, Taylor Share, Josh Houghton and Adam Lindsay.

With games still to play against Buile Hill and St Ambrose, Walkden look set to take their place in a fifth successive Salford Schools‟ Final.
