Year 10/11 Athletics

Stars of track and field strike gold at Sport City....

On the last Friday of half term, athletes from both Year 10 & 11 represented Walkden at the Greater Manchester Schools Indoor Athletics event held at Sport City. With 10 schools competing from the city, the level of competition was fierce but both our girls‟ and boys‟ teams came away with their heads held high.

First to medal in the afternoon was Rebecca Mason who won the 800m in a time of 2:28.7, then followed another gold success with Liberty Haywood-Percival winning the 300m (45.6s). In the boys‟ competition, Ben Moseley was a clear winner of the 200m (23.7s) whilst there was also a bronze medal for Taylor Share in the 60m Hurdles.

In the field events, the boys added further medals to the tally as Dylan Bradbury won the High Jump with a jump of 1.70m whilst Ayden Connor collected a silver medal in the Shot Putt (10.07m) and Jason Ziyambi took bronze in the Long Jump (5.56m).

The final events of the afternoon, 4x200m relay, both quartets won their heats but suffered mixed emotions in the final shake up for medals. The girls‟ quartet of Haywood-Percival, Mason, Eleanor Rawding and Hollie Bawden claimed a bronze medal whilst the boys team of Robert Strickland, Bradbury, Share and Moseley missed out on a bronze by 3 tenths of a second!

A very satisfactory end to the term as both teams finished in the top 5 (Boys 4th, Girls 5th) in the overall standings, narrowly missing out on the medals once more.

Well done to all competitors for their attitude and efforts throughout.
