Year 9 Rugby

Wonderful Watson scores six to seal quarter final spot...

On Tuesday, our Year 9 Rugby team travelled to Belle Vue to face St Peter’s HS in the first round of the Champion Schools’ Plate competition.

On a wet and windy afternoon, the boys adapted to the conditions and raced into an early lead with tries from Harry Watson and William Toone, Following strong defence, Watson broke clear on the right to score his second try of the game before Toone added his second from close range.

Two conversions from Danny Stone stretched the lead to 20-0. St Peter’s got their only score of the game when a line break from midfield found a gap in the Walkden defence, 20-6. Walkden ended the half on the front foot as Watson completed his hat-trick to give the boys a 24-6 half time lead.

The second half started with St Peter’s enjoying a spell of possession but a turnover on the try line allowed Walkden to break clear. Toone raced the length of the field before finding Watson in support who touched down under the posts. With the boys enjoying the lion share of possession, Watson added his fifth try of the game as he raced clear on the right wing.

A flowing passing move found Watson in space once more and he crossed under the posts to score his sixth of the afternoon to take the lead to 40-6. In the closing minutes, Ben Lowe found a gap in the defensive line to score Walkden’s ninth try as Danny Stone added the conversion to complete a 46-6 victory.

The win seals a place in the last 8 and a quarter final tie against St Peter & Paul, Widnes in the New Year.

Year 9 Girls’ Rugby

Walkden STARS shine bright in Salford Sky Try success...

On Wednesday evening, our Year 9 Girls Rugby team took part in a Sky Try Touch Rugby festival organised by Salford Red Devils.

In their opening three games, the girl’s dominated possession but were unable to find a winning score as they finished try-less in 0-0 draws against Manchester HS for Girls, Buile Hill and St Ambrose Barlow.

In their final game against Blessed Thomas Holford, a breakaway try by Lydia Hodgson gave the girls an early lead before Eve Garvey rounded off a superb team move in the corner.

An 8-0 victory sealed top spot in the competition as our nearest challengers Manchester HS for Girls could only draw their final game.

Hopefully, there will be more opportunities for this group of girls to play more regularly in the New Year, well done to all involved!

Squad: Megan Morris, Charlotte Burns, Caitlin Spinks, Elise Sollinger, Lara Matthews, Eva Shana, Alyse Clutterbuck, Maisie Lord, Eve Garvey, Lydia Hodgson, Morgan Dale.
