Walkden High Ski Trip 2016

All ability groups were challenged and made excellent progress

After 12 months of planning and dozens of ski lessons, 44 students and staff were finally excited to descend on the slopes of Montgenevre, France. With a smooth outward journey and some spectacular views on route we safely arrived at ClubHotel Rios Mages right in the centre of the village. We were warmly welcomed by our friendly reps and quickly got settled into our hotel and had a quick explore around the village.

We woke up to breath taking views of the mountain and the chair lift only 10 metres from our front door step. After a little huffing and puffing we put all our ski equipment on for the first time. We were finally ready to hit the slopes.

The weather was fantastic and we were all raring to go. Pupils met their instructors and set off exploring the mountain. The pupils showed great resilience and happily bounced back after numerous falls. Especially Mr Bridge who seemed to spend more time falling over than on his snowboard.

After the morning skiing session we headed back to the hotel for a hearty mountain lunch. Big portions of delicious food were offered refuelling us ready for more adventures on the mountain.

It was really rewarding skiing with each group and seeing our Walkden STARS make excellent progress every day. All ability groups were challenged with the many ski runs Montgenevre had to offer, ranging from the gentle green runs to the steep and technical black runs. Even when temperatures dropped to minus 10 with total white out conditions and visibility down to a few metres pupils pushed on through and excelled.

If pupils weren’t already tired enough after a hard day of skiing around the mountain we had various evening activities planned throughout the week. These included quiz night which saw pupils charging around the hotel looking for various random items, film night, sledging and pizza night sampling the local pizzas - as we were only 1 mile from Italy.

Luckily the last two days were spring-like and warm with glorious sunshine and silky smooth pistes. Along with lots of Go Pro footage and selfie taking action (particularly from the teachers!) lots of amazing skiing was done.

It was a real privilege to spend a whole week away with our fantastic students and staff. The students’ behaviour, attitude and willingness to meet a new challenge was exemplary. You were truly all Walkden Stars and can be very proud of your achievements. An extra thank you must go out to my team of Mr Bridge, Miss Warren and Mr Lynn for all their help. I couldn’t have done it without them.
