P.E Weekly Review - Junior Cricket Update

Hat-trick hero Hardman seals second successive win...

Walkden’s Junior XI made it two wins from two in the Salford Schools’ league
following a 14 run victory against St Ambrose Barlow at Swinton Moorside CC on Monday night.

After winning the toss and electing to bat, Walkden lost early wickets as both openers perished inside 3 overs. As runs proved hard to come by due to some disciplined Ambrose bowling, Walkden managed to reach 50 for the loss of just 3 wickets. The mainstay of the innings was captain Brad Palmer’s 27 that helped the boys reach 56-4.

In reply, Ambrose began their innings well but a mix up between the openers and good Walkden fielding led to the first of three run outs. With the score at 13-1, Alex Hardman started his second over and took a wicket with his fourth ball. His fifth ball also produced a wicket and he then completed his hat-trick by removing the next batsman with the very next ball! Ambrose never recovered and Tom Rawding finished with figures of 3-9 off 3 overs to help bowl the hosts out for 42.

Next week, the boys have cup action with Walkden A and B teams in action against

Moorside and St Ambrose Barlow respectively.

Team:    B. Palmer, B. Thornton, K. Lalji, T. Rawding, R. Young, D. Gavaghan, T. Forbes-Leith, M. Mulligan, A. Hardman, L. Wilson, L. Brown, J. Haslam.

P.E Weekly Review w/b 23rd June

Junior Cricket – ‘B team’ lay down a marker as they cruise into Cup Final.

After last week’s victory over St Ambrose in the Salford Schools’ League, attention turned to the cup as Walkden’s U13B team faced the same opponents at Roe Green. With 6 boys making their debut for the school team, it was going to be a tough test for the XI.

Ambrose won the toss and elected to bat first, but lost a couple of quick wickets as the opening pair of Lewis Brown and Alex Hardman picked up a wicket apiece. The leg spin of Jack Bentley was too much for the middle order and Mikey Winnard’s run out helped restrict the flow of runs. Jason Ziyambi picked up a wicket in the closing overs but a late flurry of boundaries helped Ambrose reach a total of 60-5 off their 15 overs, and Walkden’s job was half done.

Openers Bentley and Brown strode out to the crease and made a positive start, punishing the bad ball and running quick singles. B and B added 30 for the first wicket before Bentley was bowled, and the wicket brought Max Mulligan to the crease. Brown continued in a very positive fashion and Mulligan added valuable runs in quick time, hitting three boundaries in his innings of 18. Brown finished unbeaten on 23 as the boys reached their target of 61 with 21 balls to spare and clinch a 9 wicket victory.

Next Monday, the U13A team take on Moorside at Roe Green for a place in July’s final. Could we have a Walkden vs Walkden tussle for the Cup??

Team:  Jason Ziyambi, Ben Evans, Lewis Brown, Alex Hardman, Jack Green, Jack Clements, Max Mulligan, Mikey WInnard, Josh Waring, Josh Haslam, Jack Bentley.
