GCSE Media Studies

Scream Kingdom Reward Trip

As a reward for meeting controlled assessment deadlines, a number of our Y11 students were offered a horrific treat!

On Friday 23rd of October our hard-working students took a trip to the darkest of places – Scream Kingdom, Scare Park in rural Lancashire.

Currently, all Y11 students are embarking upon their final GCSE controlled assessment to produce a horror trailer for their own film idea and this seemed an ideal opportunity for inspiration, as well as a few thrills and chills.

Mrs Venables and Mrs Hall led the troop of students through a number of tours, interactive experiences and past many ghoulish characters on a trip which Well done to all our wonderful Y11s for all their hard work so far.

Barclays Advertising Competition

On Friday 23rd October, Y10 Media Studies students were visited by two advertising executives from Bartle Bogle Hegarty (BBH) in London to launch an exciting project in line with their current GCSE topic: advertising.

To enable students to understand the potential career opportunities within the creative industries, Media Studies are working closely with IamCreative through The Ideas Foundation, an organisation who offers and supports schools with real life experience of the workplace. The Barclays competition is the first project Walkden High School will be taking part in and requires students to respond to a real brief set by Barclays Bank.

Students will be working in teams to create a new advertising campaign for the ‘Life Skills’ initiative currently being promoted by Barclays. The teams will be presenting their ideas in the semi-finals on Monday 14th December when the advertising agents revisit the school.

The team chosen by the agency will then travel to London in January and will be presenting to the advertising agency team and Barclays in a high profile meeting along with 3 other schools from across the UK.

The winning team will receive shopping vouchers and a place on ‘The Ladder’, another initiative which offers further work experience opportunities and support. We wish Y10 every success with the project over the coming weeks and will keep you up to date with their progress.
