Alternative Curriculum: Dog STARS

Since October, a group of our Alternative Curriculum students have been participating in sessions with the Dogs Trust.

Michael Carter (Dogs Trust Youth Officer) visited Walkden High School to deliver a series of sessions including: responsible dog ownership, dog law, status dogs, dog behaviour and training and received a wealth of information on careers with animals and within the Dogs Trust itself.

Students were extremely excited to be visited by Uma the Labrador Retriever, allowing them an opportunity to understand positive reinforcement when handling dogs. Besotted by her soulful expression and silky coat, they displayed great maturity and confidence with all the tasks they were challenged with. Gaining confidence throughout the session, it was a joy to witness students fully engaged and they, in turn, were rewarded with plenty of licks and wags of the tail from Uma.

Sessions with Michael culminated with a visit to the Denton Dogs Trust Centre (Friday 13th January) where students learned about the charity’s work first hand. They were able to see the dogs currently looking for homes and learn about the whole process of matching new owners to a four-legged friend.

At the end of our visit we presented a cheque for £132.10 which was raised from our Dogs Trust stall at the Christmas Fair; students had baked dog biscuits and crafted decorations, knowing that all their efforts were for a great cause. Well done to all our Dog STARS, the school is extremely proud of you!
