"Thank you for the transition into High School, Amy is usually a nervous and quiet child when there is change and doesn't usually take things in her stride and therefore I was worried about her coming to High School. However, with all the work you have put in with the Year 5 & 6 pupils, she has fitted in well and is loving her time at School’’

We realise that the change from Primary School to High School is not an easy one for children or their parents. We know that transition is most effective when there is a strong collaboration between the pupils primary school , their parents and carers and the high school.

With that in mind and having listened to feedback from parents, we introduced a brand new role to Walkden of Transition  Director. The Transition Director has the transition process and your children as his key focus.

We enjoy excellent links with the local primary schools and carry out a focused programme of support for all Year 6 pupils which will help them as they prepare for the big move to high school.

We invite parents and carers into Walkden for an informal chat about their child, giving them the opportunity to share any information with the school and discuss our expectations.

In the Summer  Term of Year 6 every,  pupil joining Walkden High School is invited to attend 3 taster days to sample a typical secondary school timetable . To compliment this and further smooth the transition process we also run a Year 6 Summer School and a Year 7 team building trip to Burrs Activity Centre.

We have expanded the transition process to include Year 5 pupils , involving them in various workshops and activities at Walkden High such a Bird of Prey Show and Inflatable Planetarium Visit.
Year 7 pupils are strongly supported throughout their first year at  Walkden High School by pastoral staff and our older children. We encourage parents to contact us with any concerns they may have around their child starting high school.
